The Ugly Duckling Becomes a Swan

The Seam Ripper
Finished October 2021
For Morgan

The Seam Ripper may be an odd name for a quilt, but it is the perfect name for this one.

I was with my niece Morgan when she spied the Something Blue Made New quilt. She made a comment that she loved the quilt's colors, and they went with her home decor. How funny ~ that was exactly what Tiffany had said when she saw the Something Blue quilt. I was surprised, but Morgan reminded me these were also the colors from her wedding.

The original quilt made in August 2020 would now become two quilts - Something Blue and The Seam Ripper.

I took the extra blocks left over from my A Tisket, A Tasket, A Flower Basket quilt and the row of blocks removed from the Something Blue quilt and began the process. Adding some grey fabric remaining from another project, Morgan's quilt began to come together.

The medium blue border (and backing fabric) removed from Something Blue, was cut it in half lengthwise and became the sashing for The Seam Ripper.

I continued to seam rip the blocks and laid them out in a new pattern and set them on-point.

Because I did not have a pattern for this project, I did have to seam rip a few more of the blocks and sashing as I continued to put the quilt together.

I know my points didn't line up and the sashing didn't have crisp points, but all in all, I think it turned out quite well by the time it was done, especially when you consider that each block was seam ripped at least 3 times if not more.

I have been practicing my free motion quilting and did an all over meander on the quilt.

Every quilt tells a story. This is the story of making a quilt called The Seam Ripper, a quilt that started as a Jacob's Ladder Quilt, became Something Blue Made New, and finally a quilt for a special niece. The ugly duckling of discarded blocks had now become a swan.

Every Quilt Tells A Story
Whether it is the fabrics chosen, the design, the colors, the occasion, the recipient, or the people I quilt with, every quilt tells a story. This blog captures in images and words what has been created for others and for my own home through the hum and stitching of my sewing machine.
