For Connor Griffith
Since February 2018, I've been praying weekly on Tuesday nights via ZOOM with 5 other Biola University parents/grandparents. Spanning from California, to Arizona, to Colorado, to Canada, we meet to pray for the making of Space Waves, a movie written and directed by my son, Spencer, and filmed and produced by their students. (Connor - Cinematographer; Andrew- Producer; and Rebecca- 1st AC; plus Samual and Cynthia, two other Biola film students)
Kathleen Miller started our prayer group because this project of making a feature movie while still college students was an unsurmountable task with many obstacles along the way. In addition, we are praying for them as they enter the world of the film industry.
I had shared with Kathleen my huge personal project of making 7 quilts in 6 months (Operation Christmas Quilt 2019) for my family's Christmas. While we were talking one day, Kathleen mentioned that she had always wanted to have a t-shirt quilt made for her son.
Before I knew it, I had agreed to make Kathleen's son Connor a quilt. Kathleen is living in Arizona, so she mailed me all of the t-shirts. There was even a jersey from Conor's elementary school years.
I put this together like I had done Al's T-Shirt quilt.
Once the top was finished, I showed Kathleen the fabric I was going to use for the backing (one we had agreed upon over Facetime). Kathleen decided to use a different backing, so I had to halt production until the replacement fabric was ordered and mailed to me.
Meanwhile, I was also making a t-shirt quilt for Spencer. Nothing like doing two t-shirt quilts at the same time.
Once the fabric was received, I was able to finish it up two weeks before Connor's graduation. Connor was unaware that the quilt was being made for his graduation gift.
Kathleen put it on his bed and then filmed him seeing it for the first time. Although Connor seemed to like it, I think Kathleen was more excited about it than Connor was.
Every quilt tells a story. This is the story of volunteering to make a t-shirt quilt for a friend while making another t-shirt for my son.
Every Quilt Tells A Story
Whether it is the fabrics chosen, the design, the colors, the occasion, the recipient, or the people I quilt with, every quilt tells a story. This blog captures in images and words what has been created for others and for my own home through the hum and stitching of my sewing machine.
