I saw a quarter log cabin quilt photo with gray sashing that had captured my interest. This photo encouraged me to take this on as my next project.

I had picked up some fabric called Treasures of Alexandria by Robert Kaufman. The fabric was printed in Japan with gold metallic highlights. I had also picked up some fabric with gold threads from some various shop hops that coordinated with the Kaufman fabric.

Fabric Sample

I decided to add black sashing so all of the colors popped. It was a true joy assembling the blocks because of the rich colors.

Maureka helped me lay out the finished blocks so the colors were distributed, and Nancy helped me lay them out on-point.

I added an inner border of fabric with gold crescents.

For the backing, I used black fabric with scraps from the front.

Once it was completed, I felt like it needed to be quilted by Val on the long arm. This would be my first time to "quilt by check". I knew this was a special quilt that needed the royal treatment. We selected the Clematis pattern and used gold thread for the quilting.

I have to admit though, I panicked on the way home and texted Val, "I had always envisioned gold thread for the quilting, but did I make a mistake???" She talked me through it and assured me that I would love it.

I wanted the thread to show on the backside for a 2-for-one. I'm so glad I did. In fact, if it is hanging on display, I always show off the backside of the quilt as well.

I added the gold fabric for the binding.

Keith often says, this is his favorite quilt of all that I've made. I would have to agree. It was worth it to have it quilted by a professional. It turned out more beautiful than I could have imagined. No photo can capture the true beauty of this quilt in all its exquisite loveliness.

More Quilting Goodness

Every quilt tells a story. This is the story of making a quilt fit for royalty, giving it the royal treatment, and my first visit to a long arm quilter.

Every Quilt Tells A Story
Whether it is the fabrics chosen, the design, the colors, the occasion, the recipient, or the people I quilt with, every quilt tells a story. This blog captures in images and words what has been created for others and for my own home through the hum and stitching of my sewing machine.
